Bengal Kittens and Cats
January/February 2007

Dear Bill & Cathy,

Cynthia Varnad declared the obvious when she remarked, “It is impossible to keep a straight face in the presence of one or more kittens.” What great adventures Cathy and I experience as we interact with litter after litter spending their first weeks of life in our bedroom.

One morning I watched as Cathy brought a basket of towels fresh from the dryer and dumped them on the bed. Immediately a trio of kittens jumped on the bed and began to play on the warm pile. Planning to fold the laundry, she picked up each kitten and placed it on the floor. I stood in the doorway and laughed inwardly (almost out loud) as I observed two other kittens climb onto the bed and from the opposite side and burrow into the warm towels. As Cathy turned back to the pile on the bed, the three she had just exiled made a leap and dash as they returned to the “playground.’ Cathy threw up her hands in surrender, watched for a moment, and then jumped on the bed and joined the merry makers.

I did pull a little practical joke on Cathy the other day. While she was out shopping, I took three or four Tootsie Rolls and rolled them in my palms until they had that “just right” look. I then arranged them in a neat little pile on her favorite chair. It looked exactly like what i intended. You can imagine the “fun” when she returned. Of course, I had to duck a couple of books that she grabbed off the coffee table.

I figured that I should probably assume all latrine duty for awhile, not that I don’t do most of it anyway. Now collecting the “little packages” the kittens have deposited neatly in their litter box can be quite an experience. For me and for the kittens. As I grabbed the scoop and began to collect the little deposits, the kittens gathered all around. One up on my back, looking over my shoulder to witness (maybe surpervise) my work. Another reached out and grabbed the full scoop, as if saying, “I have to check this inventory.” Well, maybe it was all my imagination, but I could not help but chuckle out loud. Kittens are such fun, even when I have the dirty duty.

  • Information on Feeding Your Cat
    Leopard Eating

You may ask - what makes you an expert on cat food? Well, to quote another, I think I'm an expert when it comes to eating! I do it every day. However, selecting the correct food for your cat is no laughing matter.

In fact, there are volumes and volumes written on this subject and many folks out there have strong views in opposition to each other. So, if you wish to question the advice offered here you can always do a little google research.

“Although you may think all pet food manufacturers have your pet’s best interests in mind, this is not always the case. Current pet food regulations allow manufacturers to use ingredients that you would never knowingly give to your pet. In fact, you may be shocked to learn what some brands of pet food really contain. For example: the use of by-products (feet, bones and intestines, etc.), chemical preservatives (BHA and BHT) and grains that are often difficult to digest (corn, wheat, gluten and soy), which are often used as a protein source instead of meat.” (Dr Jane Bicks)

Cats are primarily carnivores and need plenty of meat in their diet. Also, cats have different needs than dogs, so don't feed your cat dog food, or your dog cat food. Cats need a much higher amount of protein and fat than dogs do. The proteins required by felines come from meat sources not from grains. Non- meat proteins do not have all the amino acids present required for the feline diet

Cats do not need carbohydrates, although corn, wheat, and/or rice are used as fillers for both canned and dry cat foods. Other ingredients, such as binders, flavoring, and coloring, are added by cat food manufacturers to satisfy the aesthetic wants of the human consumer.

We recommend that your cats be fed both dry and canned food. The dry cat food should be given for free feeding (always available). Canned cat food should be used as a supplement at meal time because it has extra water in the food. Therefore, we recommend you look for any premium quality cat food that has a high amount of protein from a meat source and a high nutrient density.

Cats should always have access to water, and you should consider having an extra bowl of water always available.

Cats and Some Famous People in History
    Cat hat

Edward Lear: Artist and author (1812-1888) was devoted to Foss, his tabby cat. His devotion was so great that when he decided to move to San Remo, Italy, he instructed his architect to design a replica of his old home in England so Foss would not be disturbed and suffer a minimum of distress after the move. Lear’s drawings of his stripped tabby cat are well-known, especially those which accompany his rhyme, “The Owl and the Pussycat.”

Henry III, King of France (1551 - 1589) must always appear to be bold and fearless, and Henry did his best to keep his image intact. But he had an Achilles heel, if a cat happened to wander into his presence, the king would faint dead away.

Difficult as it is to believe, not everyone loves cats. Genghis Kahn was a famous cat-hater and so were Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar. It may be that men with dreams to dominate the world can’t get used to the idea that cats won’t submit to them. The same streak of ailurophobia (cat hate) affected the personalities of Napoleon Bonaparte, Benito Mussolini, and Adolph Hitler.

    Frequently Asked Questions
    For Q & A

Q: What Happens to Your Cat If Something Happens to You?

A: Cats have shorter lives than we humans so it would be natural that you plan for your cat passes. We commend you for that, but what if you are the one who becomes ill or incapacitated, or who dies first? As a responsible pet owner, you provide your pet with food and water, shelter, veterinary care, and love. It's critical to plan ahead to ensure that your cat continues to receive this care should something unexpected happen to you.

Q: How can I stop my cat from scratching the furniture?

A: The short answer is that because scratching is a normal behavior, and one that cats are highly motivated to display, it's unrealistic to try to prevent them from scratching. Instead, the goal in resolving scratching problems is to redirect the scratching onto acceptable objects.

Provide your cat with a commercially available scratching post that is constructed of sisal twine and heavy-duty carpet. Place it adjacent to the site where your cat is currently scratching. Do not try and place your cat on the post because this will probably result in avoidance in the future. Play instead with a piece of string around the base to encourage your cat to claw at the post; this will often be sufficient to attract further approaches.

    Fascinating Cat Facts
    Facts

FACT # 1: In relation to their body size, cats have the largest eyes of any mammal.

FACT # 2: Tsar Peter The Great of Russia was often portrayed as a cat in political cartoons of the day.

FACT # 3: Cats can see things humans often miss, like a small insect flying through the room. This sometimes makes it appear that they are seeing "ghosts" or things that aren't there.

FACT # 4: Ailurophile - that's what we're officially called. It's what cat lovers are known as.

    Mowgli

February 27 is Spay Day USA, and we want to invite you and pet lovers all across the country to be a part of it.

Thousands of kittens are born every hour in the United States, and many will never find homes. Fortunately, spaying and neutering is a solution that we can all be a part of. It's simple, effective, and saves pets' lives for generations to come.

Throughout the month of February, you can help end pet overpopulation by supporting one of the hundreds of Spay Day USA events nationwide. You can help increase the number of pets served by raising funds to support these events.

If you are unable to find a local agency to assist, you can send a donation to Bagheera Bengals and we will forward it to Save-A-Pet of Dothan.
