Latest word on Bengal Kittens and Cats
December 2005

Dear Bill & Cathy,

We hope that you had a pleasant, relaxing, and thankful Thanksgiving. Now that the holiday season is in full-swing, your to do list is likely filling up as much as your turkey-day plates! So, we wanted to send this a little early this month hoping it would not get lost in the rush of your day :-)

We wish you a Merry Christmas! May the Joy of the first Christmas overflow you and your loved ones this season.

What a wonderful time of the year! I have always loved Christmas. My mom told everyone that I "was the spirit of Christmas." When I was little I once got so excited that I cried. Go figure ?? Anyway, Cathy, all the Bagheera cats and kittens and I, wish you the very best of all that life has to offer!

On another note, Ripple has begun work :-) We have introduced him to the ladies and love is in the air :-) So is a great deal of noise!!! Little Ripples are expected in late January and February.

If you have not checked out his pictures, be sure to do so on our web site. He is International Winner, Regional Winner, Supreme Grand Champion Suwannee Fudge Ripple of Bagheera and the Number One (#1) Bengal in the world for 2005.

There will be, and has been, a big demand for his kittens and we already have contracts on many of them. If you are interested in a Ripple kitten, please let us know.

What Causes Bad Litter Box Behavior?
Litter Box

Most kittens are born with the instinct to use the litter box and will do it without training, but there is the occasional exception. If your kitten just won’t use the box, maybe it’s his way of telling you about a medical problem like a urinary tract infection. Always rule out health issues first!

Here are some of the non-medical reasons for poor litterbox habits:

  • too many cats using same box,
  • failure to change litter frequently enough,
  • failure to provide constant access,
  • change in type of litter used, change in location of the litter box,
  • unfamiliar, frightening, or loud objects near box: dishwasher, etc.,
  • food and water too close to litterbox,
  • objectionable chemical used to wash or disinfect litterbox.

You should consider the problem from the cat's point of view. Stress plays a big part in poor behavior on the part of cats. What you may consider as "no problem," your cat may find extremely stressful.

Here are a few situations that may cause your cat to feel stressed:

  • the addition or subtraction of other pets in household;
  • visitors, company, parties, redecorating, construction,
  • any type of commotion;
  • a move to a new environment;
  • a change in routine or schedule:
  • a new job or working hours;
  • a return of the cat from boarding or hospitalization;
  • interaction problem with other pets or cats.

Stop Scratching the Furniture!
Scratching Post

Because scratching is a normal behavior, and one that cats are highly motivated to display, it's unrealistic to try to prevent them from scratching. Instead, the goal in resolving scratching problems is to redirect the scratching onto acceptable objects.

Unless you train your cat, she will not know the difference between a scratching post and a sofa or carpet.

Cats follow habitual patters of behavior, therefore, make using the scratching post a part of her morning ritual. If you have a kitten, introduce her to scratching posts early!

If your cat has already started scratching an off- limits item, you need to break the habit as soon as possible. Some options available are squirting her with water, covering te item with a plastic drop cloth, or applying doubled sided tape.

Another option that works with some cats is repellant spray. Many cats stop scratching items that have been sprayed with Feliway, a spray that is a chemical copy of feline facial pheromones.

A Funny Thing Happend the Other Day
News

Does this happen to you? Every time I sit down to read the newspaper I suddenly find several of my feline friends want the Sports section, or the Classifieds, or maybe one wants to read the latest adventure of Carlyle from the Arlo & Janis cartoon. Regardless, they make it near impossible for me to read the paper.

Well, I have now given this some considerable thought and have decided that there are several possibilities why my cats love the newspaper.

I think maybe they just like to be in the middle of things -- the center of attention (Now that is a Bengal for you!)

I suspect, however, that they may be telling me something. Like, maybe, "I can do whatever I please, thank you very much!" I'll just bet that you can relate to that one.

Cathy says that they are just looking for some reassurance that they are incredibly adored and much more important than the news! Well how do you argue with that?

I prefer to think that perhaps they notice that I am oh so busy and take it upon themselves to give me a little break from my work. Hmmmm, the more I think about that one, the more I think they may be pulling my leg, but it sure is a nice story!

I will end this with a thought from the English novelist, George Eliot, "There is one order of beauty which seems made to turn heads. . . . It is a beauty like that of a small kitten."

Fascinating Cat Facts
Facts

FACT # 1: Almost half of all cats receive Christmas gifts.

FACT # 2: A cat's heart beats about twice as fast as your heart—about 110 to 140 times a minute in the average cat.

FACT # 3: Cats seem to have an instinctive ability to find their way home; tests have shown that they use the earth’s magnetic fields to navigate.

A Word From Kittens We Have Placed

Suz in Kissimmee, FL wrote. "It was a pleasure meeting you. Thanks for showing us around your home and beautiful cattery. This little guy is GREAT. No sooner had we left when he started to meow. I open the cage, he looked at me, gave me one big sweet meow and was in my lap for the rest of the trip. Last night he slept under my chin, every now and then he would wake up just to give me a kiss. What a sweet, sweet kitten. He is a fantastic kitten! Thank you so much. He comes when called, fetches his favorite toy and is so friendly. What a smart little guy. I will highly recommend you do anyone interested in a happy healthy well socialized Bengal."

Now this from Bruno in Los Angeles, "Milord D'Ancil is THE GREATEST CAT on Earth! Since day 1, first look, at the airport, was a moment I will not forget: D'Ancil looked right in my eyes and has that! He is an intelligent, witty, spark that vibes with me. When he arrived home, he knew he was home, he was purring coming out of his traveling cage. Since then, I am stunned by his intelligence and affection everyday. He NEVER clawed anything else than his clawing pads. He falls asleep as soon as I do and wakes up with me. He seems to know what is what around the house! Like what he is supposed to play with, or not: one "no" and he looks at me, and never goes back (he knows not to go on the dinning table or kitchen counters), that is AMAZING! We built a trust, and our affection for each other has only but grown everyday. He plays hard, Loves to jump so high to get a toy. He is very athletic, loves the exercise from the hours of play time we have! From Shy with strangers at first, he is now very friendly and likes meeting my friends. I am So Blessed with him. He is perfection!"
